“Activate”: AddThis has an interesting sign up button approach and alternative. It uses a switch with the copy “activate” (after the main landing page displays a “get started” button).

Product Hunt blog post: Bret Taylor, the CEO and founder of Quip treats Product Hunt almost like a blog post, therefore encouraging other people to comment, ask questions and get involved. As a product owner you also make sure you add much needed context and humanity to a listing, which in turn might also result in an increased upvote activity and visibility.

iOS update: every update is an opportunity to get your users to rate positively (also because you need new ratings). I like it, Pocket.

Gif/Twitter: tinypng knows how to advertise their new zip download feature on Twitter.

Empty state: if you have an empty state, why not notify users to come back after that empty state is removed? (I do not remember which app I took that screenshot of)

Social proof: Overcast adds a Patreon backers directly into the settings in order to display social proof and encourage more backers. 

Social proof: added number of previous raters that might help converting anyone looking at it to help rate as well, or at least consider the popularity of the app and stick to it.
